Instructions

  • It's that time of year again--Time to enjoy the glorious flavors and aromas of Home-Baked Goodies. You can create heartwarming memories for family and friends by giving them the gift of Friendship.
  • We received Amish Friendship Bread as a gift from a friend (many years ago) and it has been a family favorite ever since. The recipe works like a delicious edible chain letter. You begin with a (started) that is prepared over a period of 10 days. When it is done you give a part of it to a friend and they give part of theirs to a friend and so on and so on. The recipe, like friendship, requires time and effort... but the results are worth it.
  • Day 1: Soften 1 pkg active dry yeast with 1/4 cup warm water for 10 minutes. Stir using a wooden spoon. In a non-metal bowl, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar, mix. Slowly add one cup warm (110*) milk and softened yeast. Pour into a large container (about 32 oz ) Cover and leave at room temperature. It will become bubbly.
  • Day 2: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 3: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 4: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 5: Add one cup flour, one cup sugar (Stir), lay one com milk on top.
  • Day 6: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 7: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 8: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 9: Stir until smooth with wooden spoon.
  • Day 10: Add one cup of flour, one cup of sugar and one cup milk (stir)

Notes

Pour into three containers; 1 cup each and give to friends with instructions. They should allow the ( Starter) to rest for one day before following the same 10 Day cycle you used above. To remaining batch (about 2 cups) add 2/3 cup of oil, 3 eggs, 1 tsp Vanilla, 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 salt and 1 to 2 cups of optional ingredients such as nuts, dates or other dried fruit, chocolate chips, apples, or applesauce, bananas, blueberries, zucchini or carrots. You can be creative here. Pour into two well greased and sugared loaf pans. Bake 45 - 55 minutes at 350*.   ENJOY!!   You may use some for baking, give some away, and/or store some in the freezer. ( It takes 3 hours to thaw )  then it behaves as if fresh.
To keep it going, store remainder in fridge and feed following the 10-day cycle. If you are getting too much, reduce the food in half at one feeding. but don't let it drop below one cup because to rejuvenate to usable amounts takes several days. to use take what you need out of the freezer and allow it to come to room temperature. Wait until it is bubbly and use as stated above...
